( in Britain ) an area of road with broad white lines painted on it, at which vehicles must stop if people on foot wish to walk across. Zebra crossings are indicated by Belisha beacons on each side of the road to warn approaching drivers. The name comes from the zebra, a wild animal similar to a horse with black and white lines on its body.
