In informal, usually spoken, language ~ has developed into a general-purpose ‘filler’ which is used to seek confirmation or merely for emphasis, as in I play it quite often, ~? (meaning ‘don't I?’) and you'd better hurry on over, ~? (meaning ‘hadn't you?’).
