Word History

Limousine entered English from French in the early 20th century and is derived from Limousin , a region in central France. The car acquired its name from a type of caped cloak worn by cart drivers in Limousin: early ~s had an outside driving seat and an enclosed passenger compartment, the roof of which was likened to the cart driver's cloak.
