[Greek heroic] A friend of Heracles, who was devoured by the mares of Diomedes while keeping guard over them. Legend has it that Heracles founded the maritime town of Abdera in Thrace in honor of his dead friend's memory. The inhabitants of that city, the Abderites or Abderitans were proverbial for stupidity, said to be caused by the air.
