CINYRAS

[Greek heroic] The son of Apollo. He is the legendary king of Cyprus, and a high priest of Aphrodite. Father of Adonis and Myrrha. He and Apollo once held a contest to determine who could play the lyre better, but he lost and committed suicide. On Cyprus, Cinyras was regarded as the inventor of the arts and musical instruments, especially the flute.
