[Arthurian] Loyal and friendly companion of Tristan. A satirical character Dinadan first appears in the Prose Tristan, skeptically commenting on chivalric codes of conduct. He states that cowardice keeps one alive and deplores the readiness of knights to do battle. He also claims to not comprehend why knights suffer the Quest for the favor of haughty ladies of the court when there are so many other women that can be charmed much more easily. Dinadan composes a song ridiculing King Mark in Malory's Morte Darthur, but his opinions rarely fall out of line with his humorous good nature. Yet, he is also a brave fighter when need arises and the death of Tristan is a bitter blow to him. Dinadan also does not voice a common viewpoint. He is regarded by others as a humorist with a sound and true heart not to be taken too seriously.
