[Judaic] A biblical prophet from the ninth century BCE, the disciple and successor of the prophet Elijah. He prophesied in the Northern Kingdom during the reign of Jehoram. Elisha foretold Hazael's accession to the Syrian throne and, on his instructions, one of his followers anointed Jehu King of Israel to depose the house of Ahab (2 Kings 2-9).
