JURUWIN

Meaning of JURUWIN in English

[Other] In the belief of the Andaman Islands (Bay of Bengal), the Juruwin are evil spirits of the sea. They are invisible beings (or occasionally described as white) which live in the sea with their wives and children. They mainly feed themselves with fish and the bodies of drowned men, but are known to sometimes attack fishermen with their invisible spears. These cause cramps and sudden illness. In the southern part of the island they are called Juruwin, while in the northern part they are called Jurua.
