He created the under-world and is considered benign and malicious in certain circumstances. The ambiguity of his role perhaps explains the multiplicity of his names in the Batak tradition: Paduka ni Aji, Pane na Bolon (the Huge Pane), Naga Padoha, and Debata Asi-asi. A further ambiguity arises from the fact that he not only rules the under-world but also the moon.
