MATUKU


Meaning of MATUKU in English

[Polynesian] A Maori demi-god, the son of Tawhaki. He was a cannibal of harsh character, brought up by one his sea-ancestors who taught him the art of making and flying kites. This ancestor also taught Matuku to walk along the bottom of the sea. In this way he could always escape his enemies, living under water. His name means "Bittern".
