MYSTERIES

[Other] A cult form in ancient Greece which came from fertility rites and were usually people try to get closer to or become one with the deity. Only those who are initiated are allowed access to the mysteries. Of the ancient mysteries, the best known are the Eleusinic mysteries of Demeter and Persephone, the mysteries of Dionysus, and those of the Cabiri on Samothrace. Because it was not allowed to talk about the rites with outsiders little is known about these mysteries. There were apparantly different levels of initiation, and those initiates were promised a better afterlife.
