PENTHESILEA

Meaning of PENTHESILEA in English

[Greek heroic] Queen of the Amazons who, in the post-Homeric legends, fought for Troy after Hector's death. She was slain by Achilles, who at that same moment was moved by her courage and beauty. However, there is more than one version of Achilles versus Penthesilea. In several of these, it was Achilles who died, not she. (See: Heinrich von Kleist, Penthesilea (Drama) and Robert Graves, The Greek Myths Vol II, page 313.)
