STRIBOG

Meaning of STRIBOG in English

[Other] Slavic god; as recorded in the Kievan Primary Chronicle, Stribog was worshipped officially by the Russians during the late 900s. Of the major East Slavic deities, Stribog is the most vaguely defined. The root of his name may be Slavic (srei-: "color") or Iranian (srira-: "beautiful," an epithet used often to describe the wind and sun). Stribog's function also remains unclear, although it seems that he was a weather or wind god. For instance, the 12th-century Russian epic, The Lay of Igor's Host (Slovo o polku Igoreve), refers to the winds as "Stribog's grandchildren."
