A green photosynthetic coloring matter of plants found in chloroplasts and made up chiefly of a blue-black ester. (2) Major light gathering pigment of all photosynthetic organisms and is essential for the process of photosynthesis. The amount present in lake water depends on the amount of algae and is therefore used as an common indicator of water quality.
