Chemicals which are formed when a disinfectant such as Chlorine is added to water that contains organic matter, usually from decaying plant or animal material. Such by-products are suspected to be human Carcinogens. One typical such disinfection by-product for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) as part of its enforcement of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) are total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs).
