The rupture of a cell placed in a dilute solution. For example, when a red blood cell is placed in distilled water, water tends to move into the cell because of the osmotic pressure generated as a result of the concentration of the materials inside the cell. As the amount of water increases within the cell, the cell membrane can no longer withstand the pressure, and ruptures.
