POLYELECTROLYTE

Meaning of POLYELECTROLYTE in English

(Water Quality and Wastewater Treatment) A high molecular weight substance which results in charged ions upon dissolving in water. Organic polyelectrolytes, also referred to simply as polymers, such as starches and gums, are widely used in the flocculation process and as coagulant aids in water and wastewater treatment. The three basic types of polymers for water clarification are cationic, anionic, and non-ionic. Cationic polymers can be used in place of, or as a supplement to, inorganics in primary coagulation. Anionic and non-ionic polymers have greater size and weight and are most effective as flocculants or coagulant aids. Anionic polymers are preferred for wastes containing inorganic solids, while cationics are better for treatment of oily water and biologically active sludges.
