R apid A pplication D evelopment in the context of development applications software. The term is used in the context of object oriented (oo), component-based and vissually-aided software that allows for faster development of applications software. For example, Netscape Corporation in 1997 introduced a component-based Visual Java-Script intended to be for the web what Microsoft's Visual Basic software was for earlier applications development. Visual Java Scrip also licensed TV-Objects from TV-Objects Corporation in Princeton, N.J. for translating Visual Basic applications into JavaScript for RAD. In 1997 Apple Corporation bet the farm on Rhapsody for RAD.
