INTRANET

A private network that relies on the same network standards and protocols as the public Internet to allow similar, closed functionality using standardized Internet and World Wide Web tools. Examples of Intranet usage include sales databases and presentations, fee-for-service information, and on-line procedures. Intranets often contain gateways to the Internet. In the graphic communications, companies are exploring the use of Intranets to improve security and transmission time while allowing customers to use Internet tools such as FTP and browsers.
