Mac-, Mc- prefix in names:(i) usually, unstressed mək , or sometimes mæk (perhaps depending on degree of formality): Mc ˈ Donald, Mac ˈ Donald, Mac ˈ donald ; but (ii) ¦mæk before an unstressed syllable: ˈ McEnroe, ˈ MacEnroe ; (iii) mə before k, ɡ : Mc ˈ Gill, Mac ˈ Gill, Mac ˈ gill, Mac ˈ Gill. This prefix is spelt sometimes Mac , sometimes Mc , sometimes M' or M', and the stem which follows may be spelt with a capital letter or with a small one. Particularly in Ireland, the prefix is sometimes written as a separate word.
