a type of ↑ rifle (=a long gun) made by a US company and known in the UK for being used by the ↑ IRA , although ArmaLite did not supply the IRA. Members of the IRA sometimes used to say that their method of achieving their aims was ‘the ArmaLite and the ballot box’, meaning a combination of violent methods and normal political methods.
