(1913–76) a British musician, ↑ composer , and ↑ conductor (=someone who directs a group of musicians) known especially for writing A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1945), A War Requiem (1962) and the ↑ opera s Peter Grimes (1951) and Billy Budd (1951). In 1948 he started the ↑ Aldeburgh Festival with his life-long companion, the singer Sir Peter ↑ Pears .
