INLA, the /ˌaɪ en el ˈeɪ/ BrE AmE
abbreviation for the Irish National Liberation Army, an illegal ↑ paramilitary organization (=a group like an unofficial army) in Northern Ireland, which wants the two parts of Ireland to be united and uses violent methods to achieve its aims. The INLA is smaller than the IRA and regarded as more ↑ extreme . Unlike the IRA it did not support the Northern Ireland peace talks of 1996–98 or the peace agreement of 1998.
