a country in southwest Africa, west of Botswana and north of South Africa. Population: 2,088,669 (2008)). Capital: Windhoek. Namibia was formerly called South West Africa, and until 1990 it was controlled by South Africa, although the United Nations did not approve of this. The fight for independence was led by SWAPO (=South West Africa People's Organization) .
