The most common steroid in the body, cholesterol is produced in the liver and carried in the bloodstream by lipoproteins. LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) is associated with an increased risk of coronary artery (heart) disease. After age 20 years, cholesterol level testing is recommended every 5 years. Diets high in cholesterol and saturated fats can increase blood cholesterol levels. Diets high in unsaturated fats can lower blood cholesterol. The most effective means of lowering blood cholesterol is to reduce dietary saturated fat intake. Treatment of elevated cholesterol includes diet, weight loss, regular exercise, and occasionally medications.
