Shingles is an acute infection by a virus called Herpes zoster, which causes an eruption of vesicles in the skin. The eruption is usually distributed along the area of the skin that is innervated by a nerve that supplies sensation. The pain associated with shingles is, in part, related to inflammation of the associated sensory nerve.
