SERRANID

[ser.ra.nid] n [ultim. fr. L serra saw] (ca. 1900): any of a large family (Serranidae) of carnivorous marine bony fishes which have an oblong compressed body covered with usu. ctenoid scales and many of which are important food and sport fishes (as the sea basses) esp. of warm seas -- serranid adj
