WORD ORIGIN

mid 16th cent. (in the sense pomegranate ): from French , alteration of Old French (pome) grenate , from pome apple + grenate pomegranate, on the pattern of Spanish granada . The bomb was so named because it supposedly resembled a pomegranate in shape.
