BAIZE

n. a coarse usu. green woollen material resembling felt used as a covering or lining, esp. on the tops of billiard- and card-tables.

Etymology: F baies (pl.) fem. of bai chestnut-coloured (BAY(4)), treated as sing.: cf. BODICE
