CARRAGEEN

n. (also carragheen) an edible red seaweed, Chondrus crispus, of the N. hemisphere. Also called Irish moss.

Etymology: orig. uncert.: perh. f. Ir. cos{aacute}in{iacute}n carraige carrageen, lit. 'little stem of the rock'
