a stimulus paired with another stimulus that elicits a known response then serves to produce the same response by itself e.g. the approach of food causes the dog to salivate - paired with a bell; and then the sound of the bell causes the dog to salivate; also known as Pavlovian conditioning after its discoverer, Pavlov (see classical conditioning).
