MACKEM

Noun. A person from Sunderland. The equivalent but less commonly used term for someone from Newcastle-upon-Tyne is a Takem. There is great rivalry between the two areas; supposedly as Sunderland was once the more prosperous manufacturing area they used to make them and Newcastle being poorer used to take them. Also spelt Makem.
