DENDROCHRONOLOGY

The compilation of a time chronology based on trees' annual formation of growth rings. The width of each ring depends on the temperature and precipitation during the year in which the ring was formed. In this dating technique, tree patterns are matched with those of known age. Using overlapping patterns, dating can be carried back about 3,000 years.
