The conversion of incident sunlight to chemical energy by plants, blue-green algae, and certain types of bacteria. The photosynthesis reaction converts water and carbon dioxide into molecular oxygen and carbohydrates. It is believed that most of the oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere is produced in this way.
