Scattering of long wavelength electromagnetic waves by small particles. For example, scattering of sunlight by air molecules falls in the Rayleigh scattering regime. Short (blue) wavelengths scatter more, giving the sky its blue color, and also red sunset, because the blue light has been scattered out in the longer path to the setting Sun.
