STANDING WAVE

A wave in which there is no movement of the nodes with respect to a fixed reference point. In a standing wave in a fluid, parcel motion may flow through the wave without movement of the wave structure itself. Atmospheric planetary waves are generally standing waves because the orography forcing the wave is stationary.
