: a commercial alloy of iron, carbon, and silicon cast in a mold, being hard, brittle, nonmalleable, and incapable of being hammer-welded but more easily fusible than steel, containing usually 2.0 to 4.5 percent carbon and 1 to 4 percent silicon, and having a melting point of 1200 to 1250° C and a weight per cubic foot of 425 to 475 pounds (sp. gr. 7.0-7.6)
