: either of two small areas of sensory hair cells in the ear located (1) in the saccule and (2) in the utricle that are covered with gelatinous material on which are located crystals or concretions of calcium carbonate and that are associated with the perception of equilibrium — called also respectively (1) macula sacculi, (2) macula utriculi
