: the philosophy of Spinoza whose fundamental ideas were that all reality is One Substance which has an infinite number of attributes of which only thought and extension are capable of being apprehended by the human mind, that all particular things and particular ideas or states of mind are modes or determinations of these two attributes and all such temporal existences are rigidly connected together in the One Substance in such a manner that all occurrences happen of necessity, and that human bondage to the passions and particular desires is due to an ignorance which fails to apprehend this inevitability so that freedom is to be won through understanding and acquiescing in this necessity and contemplative peace is to be found through the intellectual love of God — compare monistic idealism
