: a silver-white soft malleable and ductile bivalent metallic element of the alkaline-earth group that occurs only in combination especially as strontianite and celestite, that is usually obtained by electrolysis of its fused chloride or by thermal reduction of its oxide with aluminum, that turns yellowish in air, and that yields compounds capable of imparting a crimson color to flames and pyrotechnic compositions — symbol Sr ; see element table
