any of the class of thermosetting resins formed by the condensation of phenol, or of a phenol derivative, with an aldehyde, esp. formaldehyde: used chiefly in the manufacture of paints and plastics and as adhesives for sandpaper and plywood.

Also called phenolic, phenoplast .
