ENTROPY CODING

(n.) The final step in the compression process in DCT -based encoders (such as JPEG ). In this step, the encoder compresses the quantized DCT coefficients using either Huffman coding or arithmetic coding. Values that occur frequently are encoded with fewer bits than are values that occur infrequently. See also cell encoding
