Portuguese Planalto Central, eroded plateau region of southeastern Brazil. Located mainly in Minas Gerais and So Paulo states, the highlands rise to an average elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m) above sea level. The Brazilian Highlands are characterized by low mountains, hilly uplands, and tabular plateaus. They are geologically similar to the Guiana Highlands to the north, across the eastern Amazon River basin.
