GARCA III (OR IV)

Meaning of GARCA III (OR IV) in English

died Sept. 1, 1054, Atapuerca, Castile king of Pamplona (Navarre) from 1035 to 1054. Following an old custom, Sancho III the Great divided his Spanish lands among his four sons: Ferdinand I received Castile; Gonzalo received Sobrarbe and Ribagorza (modern Huesca); Ramiro I received Aragon; and Garca III received the ancient patrimony of Pamplona enlarged by portions of Castile. Although Garca helped his brother Ferdinand I of Castile against the Leonese, Ferdinand made war on him to recover the territories of Castile, and Garca was killed in the Battle of Atapuerca. He was succeeded by his son Sancho IV.
