Additional reading A collection of papers by Garfield is found in Burke A. Hinsdale (ed.), The Works of James Abram Garfield, 2 vol. (188283, reprinted 1970). Harry James Brown and Frederick D. Williams (eds.), The Diary of James A. Garfield, 4 vol. (196781), provides much information about his life and times from 1848, when he was 16, to 1881, the year of his death. Theodore Clarke Smith, The Life and Letters of James Abram Garfield, 2 vol. (1925, reprinted 1968), is also of interest. Biographical works include John M. Taylor, Garfield of Ohio: The Available Man (1970), tracing Garfield's life and career until his assassination; Margaret Leech and Harry J. Brown, The Garfield Orbit (1978), with greater focus on Garfield the man than the politician; Allan Peskin, Garfield (1978, reprinted 1987); and Hendrik Booraem V, The Road to Respectability: James A. Garfield and His World, 18441852 (1988), which examines Garfield's youth. His political life is discussed in Robert Granville Caldwell, James A. Garfield, Party Chieftain (1931, reissued 1965); and Justus D. Doenecke, The Presidencies of James A. Garfield & Chester A. Arthur (1981).
