numerous caverns at Great Basin National Park in east-central Nevada, U.S. The caves lie 5 miles (8 km) west of Baker on the eastern slope of Wheeler Peak (13,063 feet ) in the Snake Range. They are made of light gray and white limestone that is honeycombed by tunnels and galleries containing a spectacular array of stalactites and stalagmites. Established in 1922 as a national monument, the Lehman Caves became part of the Great Basin National Park in 1986. Some of the caves were used as burial places by prehistoric Indians.
