The university offers a range of bachelor's degree programs and several master's degree programs. It also offers a cooperative engineering program with Pennsylvania State University. There is a branch campus in Clearfield. Total enrollment is approximately 3,500. The university was founded in 1870 as Central State Normal School, and its mission was to train teachers for the region's public schools. In 1927 it became a four-year, degree-granting teachers college. The school's academic mission continued to grow, and the name was changed to Lock Haven State College in 1960. It became a university in 1983.
