born Aug. 22, 1800, Trieste died Sept. 30, 1865, Padua also called by acronym Shedal Jewish writer and scholar. In his writings, which are in Hebrew and Italian, Luzzatto presents an emotional and antiphilosophical concept of Judaism, and his Hebrew poetry is also pervaded by national spirit. His chief merit as a scholar lies in biblical exegesis, Hebrew philology, and the history of Hebrew literature. His extensive correspondence in Hebrew was published in 188294 and in other languages in 1890. His autobiography in Italian appeared in 1882.
