Meaning of SKYE AND LOCHALSH in English

district, Highland region, northwestern Scotland. Created by the reorganization of 1975, it includes parts of the former counties of Ross and Cromarty and of Inverness. The district consists of hilly southwestern Ross, terminating at Kyle of Lochalsh, and the nearby isle of Skye, formerly part of Inverness. There is connecting ferry service between the mainland and Kyleakin on the isle. Portree, on Skye, is the seat of the district authority. Area 1,043 square miles (2,701 square km). Pop. (1994 est.) 11,970.
