an important US Supreme Court case (1954) which made segregation in public schools illegal. It was held after a school for white children in Topeka, Kansas , refused to accept a black girl called Linda Brown. The court’s decision ended the idea of ‘separate but equal’ schools for whites and African Americans , and encouraged the civil rights movement .
